Destigmatize Mental Illness: Reject the Silence
If you think someone is considering suicide, don’t be scared to break the silence. Remember QPR:
QUESTION — ask if they are having suicidal thoughts (in the affirmative, such as “Are you having thoughts of hurting yourself?” rather than “You’re *not* having suicidal thoughts, are you?”)
PERSUADE — listen carefully, then suggest that they let you help.
REFER — contact an adult or a lifeline to get help.
Lifelines:
1-800-273-8255 (The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline)
1-866-488-7386 (The Trevor Lifeline for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning youth)
