‘There is a better way’: UK’s social media ban sparks fresh fears over ‘digital monitoring’
UK barrister and broadcaster Andrew Eborn reacts to the UK government’s plan to implement a social media ban for under-16s.
“Good intentions do not automatically make good policy because what is being proposed is not simply better online safety; it is an unprecedented expansion of age verification, digital identification, and state involvement in how young people communicate, learn and express themselves online,” Mr Eborn said.
“What begins as age verification today could become broader digital monitoring tomorrow.
“There is a better way.”
